There are several formats being used for the distribution of  audio books . Virtually any form of sound recording media can be used, though there are some practical limits for many formats. Some of the older formats included vinyl and aluminum discs and old style magnetic tape reels. For several years, magnetic tape reels were the leading technology being used for the distribution of audio books and this was the state of affairs until up to just a generation ago. Now digital formats are the predominant means for the distribution of audio books, at least in the United States.
